Never guess blindly. Because ALEKS is adaptive, guessing correctly on a topic you don't know will feed you even harder problems that waste time and lower your overall consistency.

Write every step on paper. Mental arithmetic leads to sign errors with negatives and fractions. Use scratch paper methodically before submitting open-ended numbers.

Watch exact format vs decimal instructions. If a question asks for an exact fraction (e.g. 5/8) or terms of π, do not enter a rounded decimal unless explicitly specified.
