The 5 Standard ALEKS Placement Tiers

Scores represent percentage of total mathematical domains mastered in the knowledge space.

76 – 100%

Calculus Ready (Level 5)

Typical Eligible Courses: Calculus I (Math 220 / Math 151), Analytic Geometry & Calculus, Accelerated Calculus

Maximum placement tier. Demonstrates fluency in trigonometry, advanced functions, and analytical algebra. Direct enrollment into engineering, computer science, and mathematics majors.

61 – 75%

Pre-Calculus (Level 4)

Typical Eligible Courses: Pre-Calculus (Math 140 / 115), Business Calculus / Applied Calculus, Trigonometry

Advanced placement. Meets requirements for business, biological sciences, and pre-med majors. Prepares students to advance into Calculus I the following semester.

46 – 60%

College Ready (Level 3)

Typical Eligible Courses: College Algebra (Math 105), Elementary Statistics, Finite Math, Quantitative Reasoning

Standard college-ready benchmark. Fulfills General Education math requirements for humanities, arts, and social science degrees without remedial prerequisites.

30 – 45%

Preparatory Math (Level 2)

Typical Eligible Courses: Intermediate Algebra, Introduction to College Mathematics, Foundations of Quantitative Reasoning

Pre-requisite tier. Requires one preparatory course to solidify foundational algebra skills before credit-bearing college algebra.

0 – 29%

Developmental Math (Level 1)

How to Retake the ALEKS Placement Test

Cooling-off PeriodAlmost all institutions enforce a mandatory 24- to 48-hour waiting period between test attempts. This prevents consecutive guessing and encourages focused review.
Prep & Learning ModulesYou are typically required to spend 3 to 5 hours inside the personalized McGraw-Hill ALEKS Prep & Learning module before your second or third attempt unlocks.
Which Score Counts?Colleges virtually always take your highest proctored score, not your most recent score. There is zero penalty for attempting a retake!
